Stability is the schedule, and most brands find that out late

Brands treat stability as a box to tick after the formula is done. It is not a box. It is a twelve-week fixed cost in calendar time, and it is usually the longest single uninterruptible block in the entire launch.

Worse, it can restart. Change the preservative and stability restarts. Change the package and compatibility testing restarts. Change the fragrance at a meaningful percentage and stability restarts. A texture tweak approved casually in month four can move a launch by a quarter.

The brands that launch on time are the ones that locked the formula, the package, and the fragrance before the clock started — not the ones that tested faster.

Cosmetic stability testing conditions

There is no single mandated protocol for cosmetic stability in the US. These are the industry-standard conditions most labs run.

Twelve weeks at 40°C is commonly used as a proxy for roughly two years at ambient. It is a working convention, not a guarantee — real-time data is what ultimately supports a shelf life claim.

Frequently asked questions

How long does cosmetic stability testing take?

Accelerated stability testing takes a minimum of twelve weeks at 40 to 45°C. Preservative efficacy testing takes 28 days and packaging compatibility runs twelve weeks concurrently. Real-time stability continues past launch for the duration of the claimed shelf life. Twelve weeks is the practical floor before production can begin.

Is stability testing legally required for cosmetics?

There is no US regulation mandating a specific stability protocol. However, MoCRA requires adequate substantiation of safety, and stability and preservative efficacy data are the primary evidence supporting that a product remains safe over its shelf life. In practice it is required — just not by a protocol number.

What is preservative efficacy testing?

Preservative efficacy testing, also called challenge testing, deliberately inoculates the product with specified microorganisms and measures whether the preservative system controls them over 28 days. It is run under USP <51> or ISO 11930 and validates that the product resists contamination through normal consumer use.

What is packaging compatibility testing?

Compatibility testing stores the finished product in its actual final package under stability conditions to confirm the two don't degrade each other. It catches component leaching, discoloration, seal failure, panel deformation, and fragrance absorption into plastic — all failures a formula tested in a lab jar would pass.

Can I speed up stability testing?

No. Accelerated testing is already the compressed version; twelve weeks is the floor. What can be compressed is everything around it — locking the formula sooner, selecting the component earlier, and running compatibility and preservative efficacy concurrently instead of in sequence.

Do I need to retest if I change my packaging?

Yes, at minimum for compatibility. A change of primary package material or closure changes the product's chemical environment and its seal. Secondary packaging changes such as a carton or sleeve do not require retesting because they don't contact the product.
