Private Label Personal Care
Private label is the fastest route to a shelf-ready product — eight to sixteen weeks instead of a year. MakeMine manages the base selection, componentry, compliance, and fill so the speed advantage doesn't come with a quality compromise.
Book an Intro CallPrivate label isn't a lesser product. It's a different bet.
The instinct among founders is that custom formulation is the serious path and private label is the shortcut. Sometimes that's right. Often it isn't.
If your differentiation is the formula — a proprietary active, a texture nobody else has, a claim that requires bespoke chemistry — custom is the only real option and the timeline is the price of entry.
If your differentiation is the brand, the audience, or the channel, a year of formulation development buys you very little. You spend twelve months and significant capital arriving at a product a good stock base would have delivered in twelve weeks, while the market you were building for moved.
The failure mode isn't choosing private label. It's choosing it badly — an undifferentiated base, a component everyone else uses, and a label that admits it.
What MakeMine manages in private label
Base selection
Matched to your claim, texture, and price point across the network's available formulas rather than one lab's catalog.
Base modification
Fragrance, color, and in some cases active adjustment to differentiate from the stock formula. What a given base will tolerate varies, so the available changes are confirmed before you commit to it.
Exclusivity review
Understanding who else uses the base and what protection, if any, is available.
Componentry
Primary and secondary packaging sourced to your brand rather than the manufacturer's stock offering.
Compatibility check
Confirming the base performs in the component you've chosen.
Regulatory
Label build and the testing data behind your safety substantiation. Product listing stays with you as the Responsible Person. See Quality.
Production and fill
Batching, filling, decoration, and pack-out.
Fulfillment
Direct handoff into MakeMine fulfillment where it makes sense.
White label, private label, and custom formulation
These three terms get used interchangeably and mean different things. The difference determines your minimum, your timeline, and whether the product is defensible.
| White label | Private label | Custom formulation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Formula | Off the shelf, unmodified | Stock base, often modified for scent or color | Developed to your specification |
| Exclusivity | None — sold to many brands | Limited; base may be shared | Yours or exclusive |
| Packaging | Usually the manufacturer's stock | Your components | Your components |
| Typical MOQ | 250–1,000 units | 500–2,500 units | 2,500–10,000 units |
| Time to first production | 6–10 weeks | 8–16 weeks | 9–15 months |
| Development cost | Minimal | Low | Significant |
| Best for | Testing demand, a merch extension | Brand-led differentiation, fast line extension | Formula-led differentiation |
How to differentiate a private label product
The base is the least differentiated part of a private label product. Everything else is available to you.
| Lever | What it buys you |
|---|---|
| Fragrance customization | The most immediately noticeable difference to a consumer, at relatively low cost |
| Component selection | A stock base in distinctive packaging reads as a distinct product |
| Active adjustment | Where the manufacturer permits it, shifts the claim and the performance |
| Decoration and finish | Frost, soft touch, metallization, and print quality signal price tier |
| Secondary packaging | Cartons and inserts move perceived value more than formula changes do |
| Base exclusivity | Where available, prevents a direct competitor using the identical formula |
| Regimen construction | Sequencing and pairing across SKUs is a brand decision no base dictates |
What MakeMine will tell you about private label
- If your differentiation is the formula, private label won't get you there and we'll say so — even though it is the faster, easier engagement.
- If the base you like is used by a direct competitor, you hear that before you build a brand on it.
- If a claim you want to make isn't supported by the base, we don't put it on the label.
- If custom formulation is the honest answer for your business, we tell you that, including the year it will take.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between white label and private label?
White label is an existing product sold unmodified to multiple brands under their own labels. Private label typically means a stock base customized in some way — fragrance, color, sometimes actives — and packaged in your own components. Private label offers more differentiation; white label offers lower minimums and faster launch.
What is the minimum order for private label skincare?
Typically 500 to 2,500 units per SKU. The floor is usually set by the component minimum rather than the formula, since the base already exists and the filling batch is the manufacturer's standard. Choosing stock components rather than custom keeps the minimum at the low end.
How long does private label take to launch?
Eight to sixteen weeks from base selection to finished goods. Componentry is usually the longest item on that schedule. Because the base already has stability data, the twelve-week testing block required for custom formulation doesn't apply — though compatibility testing in your chosen component still does.
Can I claim a private label product as my own formula?
You can sell it as your brand's product, which is what private label means. Claiming you developed the formula when you did not creates a substantiation problem and a credibility problem. The more durable position is to differentiate on what is genuinely yours — the selection, the regimen, the brand, and the audience.
Is private label lower quality than custom formulation?
No. Stock bases from good manufacturers are often extensively tested and refined across many production runs, which can make them more reliable than a first-generation custom formula. Quality tracks the manufacturer and the base, not the business model.
Can I move from private label to custom formulation later?
Yes, and it is a common and sensible path. Launching on private label validates demand and generates revenue while custom formulation runs in the background on its own year-long timeline. The main consideration is managing the transition so the reformulated product doesn't disappoint customers who bought the original.
Do MoCRA requirements apply to private label products?
Yes. If your name is on the label, you are likely the Responsible Person, with obligations for product listing, safety substantiation records, and adverse event reporting. Using someone else's formula does not transfer those obligations to them. See Quality.
