Brands negotiate the hero active and accept everything else. But the active is usually a small percentage of the formula and a smaller percentage of the cost. What determines whether the product can be made on time is the ordinary material — the emulsifier with a 25 kg supplier minimum, the botanical extract with a single global source, the fragrance that takes ten weeks to develop.

Single-source materials are the sharpest version of this. A formula built around one supplier's proprietary complex is a formula with one point of failure, and you find out how sharp it is the first time that supplier has an allocation problem.

Ingredient decisions are supply chain decisions. They should be made with the supply chain visible.

Use level is not the whole story. The same percentage performs differently depending on pH, the delivery system, and what else is in the formula, so treat these as the range to formulate within rather than a target to hit.

What percentage of niacinamide should be in a serum?

Cosmetic formulations typically use 2 to 10% niacinamide. Around 4 to 5% is a common balance point between efficacy and tolerance; above 10% the tolerance reports increase without a proportional benefit. The right level depends on the rest of the formula and the claim being made.

What is an INCI name?

INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients — the standardized naming system used on cosmetic ingredient declarations worldwide. Every ingredient has one INCI name regardless of supplier or trade name, which is why the label reads "Butyrospermum Parkii Butter" rather than "shea butter."

What is a certificate of analysis for a raw material?

A COA documents that a specific lot of a raw material was tested against its specification and met it — typically covering identity, purity, appearance, and relevant assay values. It is issued per lot by the supplier and is required for the material to be released into production under GMP.

How long does custom fragrance development take?

Ten to twenty weeks from brief to approved scent, depending on how many submission rounds the brief requires. Fragrance development runs in parallel with formulation, but a fragrance change after stability testing begins restarts stability, so the scent needs to lock before the formula does.

What does COSMOS certification require?

COSMOS certifies both organic and natural cosmetics against criteria covering ingredient sourcing, permitted processing methods, packaging, and manufacturing. It requires certified raw materials, a certified manufacturing facility, and audit — which is why it raises both material cost and lead time rather than just adding a logo.

Are natural ingredients safer than synthetic ones?

Not inherently. Safety depends on the specific material, its purity, and its use level, not on its origin. Some botanical materials are potent sensitizers and some synthetics are among the best-characterized ingredients available. Natural is a positioning decision; safety is established by substantiation data either way.
