Custom componentry is a tooling project, not a purchase

Brands select packaging the way they select a design: they find a shape they like and expect to order it. If that shape doesn't already exist as stock tooling, what they have actually chosen is a mold — twelve to twenty weeks to cut, a five-figure tooling cost, and a minimum measured in tens of thousands of units.

The second surprise is compatibility. The component that photographs best is not always the one your formula survives in. A high-oil formula in the wrong plastic will absorb into the wall, panel the container, or fail the seal — and you find out twelve weeks into compatibility testing, at which point you're re-selecting a component and restarting the test.

Componentry decisions belong at the same table as formulation decisions, not after them.

The formula constrains the component and the component constrains the formula. Choosing either in isolation guarantees a rework.

  • Components are ordered on the fabric-equivalent schedule — at PO, not after approval. A missing cap loses your filling slot.
  • We don't commit to a custom tooled component without the tooling timeline and cost in front of you first.
  • Compatibility is tested in the actual component. Approving a package on a rendering is not approval.
  • If your volume is below the component minimum, we tell you the real unit economics rather than quoting the stock price.
  • If a sustainability claim on your packaging isn't supportable, we say so. Recyclable in theory is not recyclable in practice.

What is the minimum order for custom cosmetic packaging?

Stock components typically start at 1,000 to 10,000 units depending on the format. Custom tooled components typically start at 10,000 to 50,000 units and carry a separate one-time mold cost. Decoration such as screen printing carries its own per-design minimum independent of the component quantity.

How long does custom cosmetic packaging take?

Sixteen to twenty-eight weeks for a custom tooled component, including mold development. Stock components run four to twelve weeks depending on format, with airless pumps and tubes at the longer end. Tooling time sits ahead of production lead time rather than overlapping it.

What is an airless pump and when should I use one?

An airless pump dispenses product without drawing air back into the container, using a piston or collapsible pouch. It suits formulas with air-sensitive actives such as vitamin C or retinol, and formulas with minimal preservative systems. It has a narrower viscosity window than a standard pump, so the formula and the pump must be selected together.

Why does my formula need to be tested in the actual package?

Because product and package interact. Oils and fragrance can absorb into certain plastics, some formulas discolor in contact with specific resins, vacuum can panel a container, and a seal that holds water may not hold a surfactant system. Testing in the final component is the only way to catch these before a full run.

Can I use PCR or sustainable packaging?

Yes. Post-consumer recycled resin, mono-material construction, and refill systems are all widely available, typically at higher cost and sometimes higher minimums. PCR resin can carry color and consistency variation between lots, which matters if your brand depends on an exact container color.

Who owns the tooling if I pay for a custom mold?

It depends on the agreement, and it should be settled before the mold is cut. Tooling ownership determines whether you can move production to another facility later. If it isn't documented, the mold typically stays where it was made. MakeMine documents tooling ownership before the mold is cut, not after.
